Malagan Ceremonial Mask, Papua New Guinea

Malagan carvings are owned by particular clans and made for ceremonies by specially commissioned carvers. This mask was created by the master carver Fabian Pano. Fabian learned the craft from his father, who learned from the generations before him. These masks were used in the Malagan ceremonies, a ritual for the communities to mourn their dead and to assist the souls of the deceased to pass into the spirit world.

In New Ireland, the body of the deceased is now generally buried or cremated, while in the past it was buried at sea, which is why I took the photo near the water. These masks used to be burned after a ceremony but there are so few carvers left, the masks are now preserved and collected. —Alison Wright
